Plaid posted a leaflet through our letterbox last week urging us to attend a meeting about Labour blocking the policy on closing down Lansdowne School to make way for a new Welsh-medium school.
The leaflet goes on to attack the Labour Assembly Government policy on its refusal to close down the schools. The fact that Plaid Cymru are its coalition partners is only mentioned when its explained in the leaflet that ‘given that Plaid Ministers’ were not consulted about this and was a unilateral Labour decision’.
Its a sobering example of weakness by the party if Labour really can’t be bothered to consult them regarding the future of Welsh medium education, a core policy for the Welsh nationalists, in a council which they are also a coalition partners.
Its not the first time really that Plaid have fumbled on this issue. When Cardiff City Council was led by a minority Liberal Democrat group before 2008, they presented a similar plan to replace English medium schools with Welsh-medium schools. Plaid Cymru group, for reasons only known to themselves, to vote against this. Angering a lot of their core supporters in the city.
I suspect that many members of the Liberal Democrats group in the City Council are enjoying watching their coalition partners tying themselves up in knots around the issue!
